My Unicorn
Written by Ruth Holmes
I ran into my backyard full of energy. I knew something exciting was going to happen. It was a beautiful sunny summer day. The sky was blue, the fluffy clouds were snowy white. But something was missing, and I was waiting.
I ran around one corner and peeked. Nope, nothing there. Obviously, the wrong place. So, I ran around the next corner. Still nothing. I wasn’t giving up. I could feel my expectation. I could feel my excitement and I was ready.
I stood still and closed my eyes. I searched my mind to what might be coming. I waited. There it was.
The image at first was blurry but slowly came into focus.
I was so excited I opened my eyes and looked around. Everything was the same.” Oh, no.” I thought. I wanted the image to come back. I ran over to the grass and waited.
There, there he was. He turned to look at me. My eyes closed tightly and my heart beating fast I watched as he stood regally still.
My unicorn was handsome. He was cotton ball white with a long, thick mane that moved gently with the breeze. His eyes were big, round, and full of mischief. His unicorn was silver and shiny. He held his feathered wings snugly against his side.
I didn’t move, thinking he might be frightened away if I made any noise or movement.
Slowly I opened my eyes and to my surprise, he was still there. Right in front of me. I walked up to him and stretched out my hand to pat his head. He snorted. I moved closer and he nudged me. Apparently, unicorns like to be scratched behind their ears, because he lowered his head so I could reach better.
As a habit, I always carry an apple in my pocket. Just in case I get hungry or in this case if I find a unicorn. I offered the apple to my unicorn and he must have been hungry because he gobbled it up, fast.
So many thoughts ran thru my head. Could I keep him? Would he stay?
As I wondered, I heard a distant neigh or maybe a whinny. Then another. As the sounds grew closer, I turned to look at my unicorn. He tossed his head happily, stretched out his beautiful white wings, and lifted off the ground. I watched as he joined his family of unicorns that were flying over my backyard. He turned to look at me as if to say, thank you for the treat.
Although, my unicorn flew away, for a short time I had my very own unicorn.
